Sometimes I would cry for fifteen minutes, other times for hours. One night my mother called my grandmother—the prayer warrior. My grandmother could make anything better with prayer. During visits to my grandmother's house, I often slept in her bed. Each morning before daylight she would get up, kneel, clasp her hands, place her elbows on the bed, and begin to pray. Most times these were quiet, whispered conversations with God. Once, though, I was shaken awake by her urgent entreaties for help.

March 7--Something of Socially Redeeming Value And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love. (1 Corinthians 13:13 NIV) A co-worker once said he wanted to do something of socially redeeming value. Unfortunately, he didn't see that living each day and lovingly relating to people could do just that. Instead, he dreamed of doing big things, things that changed society, that changed the world.
As morning comes with the dawn without exception, our hope in God is ever present in our lives. Hope for a truly inclusive community is about making room for God's creativity in the midst of our conventional understandings of life. It's about the promises of God and the potential of bringing needed changes. This hope extends God's creative power to all people by offering a future amid the ambiguous and even hopeless discords that threaten our lives. This hope is a genuine commitment to openness.
